Who are you really?
Who are you really?
In this article it might seem that I get a little ‘new-age’ in my writing but hopefully, if I can get just one person to reflect on that question, then it will have been a success.
I remember hearing somewhere that we’re the ‘sum of our experiences’, which is quite often the case; add into the pot our DNA and we have the whole picture…or do we?
Who are you really?
Are you the person that other people have made? Are you a bad person because other people have told you are? Are you stupid because of the same reason? Are you weak because other people have told you that they’re stronger than you?
Who are you really?
Our DNA gives us our potential. Our upbringing and experiences fill up our potential to shape us into who we become. But consider this for a moment; other people telling you how things are form many of the beliefs that you hold today.
Racism is a classic example and so is religion. As a baby you have no idea that these concepts exist it’s only as you get older, and you start getting programmed by your environment, that this changes.
A classic example is me joining the Army. Before I joined I didn’t drink, smoke or swear but after a couple of years of programming I did all three. Not only that but I was trained to kill people in a multitude of different ways. Is this a good thing? The government thought so.
It took at least a year of self-analyzing to understand that just because the Army told me it was ok to shoot at an Iraqi militia that it didn’t make it true. As I followed that path of introspection I found that lots of things that I’ve assumed to be true, were in fact, false.
So we come back to that question again.
Have you reached your true potential or have you become the person someone else wanted you to become?
One simple tool you have to find out is the ability to question. Why do you believe certain things? How do you know that your belief is correct? If you can’t justify a belief then cast it away and find one that sits well with your self, your conscience, your heart.
It’s ok to listen to advice from others but you don’t have to accept what they say is true. You don’t have to even accept what I’m writing as true you only have to think about it a little.
I hope that one day you’ll be able answer the question and
reach your true potential.
